Where to go in Fiji
When visiting Fiji, because there are so many different islands, it’s good to have a bit of of geographic knowledge to understand where you can get to with ease from where you are staying. Most islands are within reach of each other either by plane or boat, however most travellers begin in Nadi, at the international airport before venturing to other islands or resort within driving distance.
Although most people will stick around Nadi for a day or two to see some of the amazing places nearby or prepare for visits to surrounding offshore islands, the most popular destinations are the secluded ones that you can travel to from Nadi.
The Mamanucas are a group of islands that feature heavenly beaches and coral cays with names as exotic as the locations themselves. North of the Mamanucas lies the Yasawa Islands, which are a group of larger, volcanic islands where you can find budget beach resorts as well as high end boutique accommodation.
Very popular with families are the beach resorts of the Coral Coast on the southern coast of Viti Levu, about an hour’s drive from Nadi. Inland from the Coral Coast lies the pristine heart of Viti Levu which is packed with hiking trails and climbing options for Mount Tomanivi.
On the south east is Pacific Harbour which is Fiji’s adventure playground where you can partake in activities like whitewater rafting, shark diving, jet boat and jet ski safaris. The outer islands of Fiji includes the Lomaiviti Group, which is a short journey by boat from the east coast of Viti Levu. It’s a far less commercial option compared to the Mamanucas and Yasawas.
Far out to the east, spreading across hundreds of kilometres of ocean space is the Lau Group of islands. Reached only by cargo boat from Viti Levu, these islands offer true pristine adventure and Polynesian culture.
Vanua Levu, which is Fiji’s second largest island,, is located in the northern part of the spectacular group of islands of Fiji. Its south coast features the spectacular sailing anchorage Savusavu and to its east is Taveuni, which is known as Fiji’s “Garden Island”, half of which is protected national parks perfect for rainforest hikes and nature at its best.
