The Big 5 - Animals You Must See On African Safari

Heading to Africa is a dream of many, and for most people that have a soft spot for animals in the wild, Africa is a destination that rates very high on their bucket list. You may have heard the term “The Big Five” even if you don’t know a great deal about Africa. The Big Five is the most common reason for people to visit Africa. For well over a century the Big Five have attracted tens of thousands of tourists every year, and with good reason.

So what is the Big Five?

The Big Five represents five animals. The lion, the elephant, the buffalo, the rhinoceros and the leopard.

So how did they come to be called the big five?

Originally The Big Five was a hunting term used by the ‘great white hunters’ of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Big Five swiftly became known as the most dangerous animals to hunt and even though the hunting side of things has almost completely been eradicated, the new breed of shooters (photographers) still uses the terminology for the same reasons.

Why are the big five so popular?

The thrill of the chase was what began the popularity, but now the thrill of being able to capture the captivating beauty of these animals in their natural habitat on film is what draws most.
