Top things you need to know about Moru Kopjes

November 12, 2017

If you’re planning a trip to Central Africa for the annual migration, or at any time of year, there are a number of places that you must include on your itinerary – and Moru Kopjes is one of those.

The Moru Kopjes, located in the Serengeti National Park in the heart of the Serengeti, are huge granite rock formations that emerge from the ground like small mountains, creating beautiful vistas and a home to an abundance of local wildlife and flora.

One of the most special features of the Moru Kopjes are the trees which grow from the rocks. With the desert floor too hard for trees to grow, trees have actually taken advantage of the trapped water in the rock formations – as do the local animals! They also love the rocks as they provide a great vantage point when hunting or looking for predators.

The area offers amazing game viewing throughout the year, and is within reach of the annual migration which hits the region between July and November.

At Moru Kopjes you will also be able to keep a watchful eye out for the local black rhinos. This is the only place in Serengeti National Park where the black rhino still lives.

Unfortunately these creatures are still endangered with the local herd closely monitored by anti-poaching rangers.

You’ll also find a variety of other animals in the area, including large herds of elephant, lions and leopards, wildebeest and zebra. You can also visit the nearby Lake Magadi where the flamingos dance on the water, providing an ideal photo opportunity that is second to none.

If you’re heading to the Moru Kopjes, it helps to have a great place to stay and one of the best in the area is Roving Bushtops. Located at Seronera, in the Central Serengeti, this is an ideal getaway providing a luxurious bed amongst wild game and bush setting.
