There’s no doubt that New Zealand is one of the world’s favourite ski holiday destinations so if you’re planning a ski trip this winter, why not book yourself a great bespoke tour to the region, that will not only save you time and money, but also hassle.
Having your ski trip booked before you go is the key to enjoying yourself fully and when it comes to New Zealand, it helps to do some research before you go so you know where you can get the most from your ski holiday.
Here are some tips:
The North Island
The North Island has two commercial ski fields and includes New Zealand’s only skiable volcano, which is pretty cool.
Mt Ruapehu is the most developed ski area in New Zealand and has two ski fields, Turoa and Whakapapa which are located in the middle of an active volcano. If you’re a beginner, head to Happy Valley in Whakapapa; while the experienced skier might prefer to head off piste at places like Broken Leg Gully, Yankee Slalom and Milk Run. Whakapapa has 30 runs and the highest lift access in the country. Turoa is great for all levels of experience and includes a dedicated park for snowboarders.
The South Island
On the South Island you’ll find numerous ski resorts, all of which are not far from Christchurch or Queenstown. Coronet Peak and the infamous Remarkables are close to Queenstown and are great for skiers of all ages and experience levels. Head to Coronet Peak for a challenge, or go off piste to the 1.5km Homeward Bound at the Remarkables.
At nearby Wanaka you’ll find Cardrona, a resort that includes 345 hectares of skiable terrain. For an advanced experience, check out Treble Cone which has long uncrowded runs and groomed slopes. You’ll also get to see some amazing views of Lake Wanaka! Well worth the visit.
