If you are travelling to Africa, chances are your reasons are to do with the wild game animals that call the vast continent their home. If you are interested in seeing more than just the Big Five, and have a bit of time to check out more than one region of Africa, then these are the most amazing game reserves to add to your list, and each has their very own specific reason for visiting.
The first is Okavango Delta, in Botswana. The feature of this amazing game reserve is the enormous crocodiles and mokoro canoe (dugout canoes specific to the delta region) safaris are one of the most exhilarating experiences you can imagine.
Okavango is the world’s largest inland delta, and is roughly the same size as Israel. 6 metre crocodiles and submerged hippopotamus lying in wait are some of the amazing large creatures to be seen here.
For accommodation, Chobe Water Villas are located over the Chobe River, or directly within reach, and feature breathtaking 180° views of one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Africa; home to 164-mammal and 460-bird species, Chobe National Park.
Next on your list of must see game reserves is Etosha National Park, which is located in Namibia. It is set in a slice of Africa’s most mesmerizing landscapes and is a spectacular wildlife venue.
Etosha means "Great White Place" and the ancient lake bed formed around 12 million years ago is a startling white and covers a quarter of Etosha’s 22,300 square kilometres, and the name sure takes meaning when you first lay eyes on it. Etosha is home to more than 300 species of birds, thousands of gazelle and antelope, and of course the Big Five.
Kruger National Park is South Africa’s leading park, is famous for the prodigious diversity of habitats (16 macro eco-zones) that can be found in the 300 kilometres of wilderness between the Limpopo and the Crocodile rivers. Its main access is via 4x4 self-drive, or guided safaris, and is home to so many types of game that we couldn’t possibly list them all.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana is the perfect place to seek out the robust Kalahari lions. The San Bushmen have lived here for an estimated 30,000 years and in the heart of the Kalahari, and you can camp within earshot of roaring lions and complete and utter serenity.
Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda delivers the best expansive savannah you can imagine, as well as sky-high mountains. It shares borders with Sudan and Kenya’s Northern Frontier District, and you visit Kidepo Valley, the rewards are phenomenal. It’s teeming with wildlife and boasts exclusivity rarely seen.
