Without a doubt, Chobe National Park in Botswana is one of southern Africa’s most visited National Parks and it’s easy to see why. Spread over almost 12,000 sq kms, you’ll experience one of the largest wildlife habitats in Africa and you’ll remember the experience forever. Here are 3 reasons you need to visit Chobe National Park:
1. The Animals
Chobe is home to an abundant number of elephants and provides a fantastic setting for getting up close and personal with this majestic creature. There are anywhere from 50,000 to 120,000 elephants in the park. You’ll also be able to enjoy the view as zebra, hyena, kudu and antelope wander through the wetlands, savannah, floodplains, marsh and woodlands of the National Park; and you may even spot 4 of the Big 5 that call the park home (Rhinos are not residents of the park). You’ll no doubt see lions, and if you’re lucky – you may even spot a cheetah or leopard. Keep your eyes peeled!
2. The River
Chobe River provides the optimum game viewing experience as you take a mokoro ride, or boat tour, along the water. Watch as the sunsets over the land, spotting herds of up to 5,000 elephants, hundreds of buffalo, giraffe and antelope as they reach the water’s edge for an afternoon drink. Keep a watch on the water itself and you might find yourself face-to-face with a crocodile or a hippo! Just make sure your hands stay in the boat.
3. The Land
One of the most spectacular things about Chobe is the ever-changing landscape. From the river that passes through the Kalahari, to the floodplains and grasslands. There is an ancient super lake, the Mubabe Depression with curved ridges, rocky outcrops, seasonal marshes and Riverine Forest – all waiting for you (and your camera). And let’s not forget the sunsets! Watching as the sun sets over the Chobe River is a sight you’re never going to forget.
